Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media in addition to a public speaking Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency the site with videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that explores the representations of females in the popular media narratives. She's dedicated to breaking down stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular culture. She also seeks to educate people about the online abuse directed towards women, as well as other marginalized groups of individuals. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Political and Social thought with a degree from York University, is also a highly sought after public speaker. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. As a child she was captivated by the issues surrounding gender identity and feminist ideas. In her final year at university, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. Her website was in the process of launching a collection of online videos that examined the game's gender-based representations and was the target of cyber-bullying. The attack did not stop her, however it did strengthen her determination as feminists who criticize media. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for years as well as the founder of Feminist Frequency, an non-profit educational organization that studies the representation of women in popular culture.
